When we were preparing to move to Canada from the Philippines in 2008, we did not know anyone in Oakville. But our Filipino-Canadian friends spoke highly of the town. Our immigration consultant even recommended that we settle there. A person's lasting impressions of a place are formed when he meets people there. 

The first Oakville resident we met was Hilary. We were looking for a house to buy and my wife stumbled upon Hilary's website. We contacted her and she became our instant guide on how to settle down in Canada. She understood our anxieties and was keenly sensitive to our needs. Our conversations were 40% about the houses she was showing us and 60% about the things we needed like looking for a doctor for our son who developed an allergy, finding a good house painter, choosing a contractor to renovate the house, contacting a handyman, and all sorts of stuff that were never in the handbooks that they give to immigrants.
